Composition rules you can actually type into a prompt
Default AI images center the subject because that is the average of the internet's photos. Composition words break the default — each one repositions the subject, the empty space, and where the eye travels.
Rule of thirds and off-center subjects
"Subject on the left third, looking into the empty frame" places the figure off-center with deliberate breathing room. The direction of gaze plus the empty space is what creates narrative tension — the subject is looking at something we can't see.
Centered composition is a choice too — "dead-center symmetrical framing" is the Wes Anderson look, and it reads as deliberate because everything around the subject is balanced.
Leading lines and where the eye goes
"Leading lines toward the subject" recruits the environment — roads, fences, shadows, architecture — to aim at your subject. It's the difference between a subject pasted into a scene and a scene arranged around a subject.
Diagonal lines read as energy, horizontal lines as calm, converging lines as depth. "Diagonal composition" alone tilts the whole frame's mood.
Negative space is a subject too
"Vast empty sky above a tiny figure" is negative space as drama — the emptiness is what the picture is about. Editorial covers use it for headline room; mood pieces use it for scale.
This is also a practical instruction — empty space in a frame is where text, logos, and UI can live later. Deliberately composing for negative space is how a hero image leaves room for a headline.
Prompts that work
"Figure on the right third, looking left into negative space, overcast sky." — placement plus gaze plus the emptiness doing narrative work.
"Symmetrical centered composition, figure in a doorway, balanced architecture." — the deliberate-center look.
"Leading lines — a road curving toward the subject at golden hour." — the environment aiming at the person.
"Frame within frame — her face seen through a rain-streaked window." — layered depth from a foreground frame.
The honest limits
Composition words guide, not guarantee — the model tends toward the rule you name, not pixel-perfect thirds. If the crop matters exactly, generate with margin and crop after.
Rules fight clutter: a busy scene dilutes leading lines. Simple scenes compose more obediently — and lighting terms do half the composing anyway, since the eye goes to the lit part first.
